Founder Kameese Davis was inspired to create her brand by her beautiful daughter, called, yes, you’ve guessed it, Nylah. Shortly after becoming a mum, she felt a growing passion to create a cultured brand that boldly celebrates and embraces afro textured hair, underpinned by African heritage, hair and science.
She says "we wanted to create a family-orientated brand that challenged the societal perceptions of the accepted standards of beauty. I wanted my daughter to know, from her earliest memory, that she, with her lovely brown skin, soft kinky hair and pronounced African features, was also, the very definition of 'beautiful'. In my family, feeling intrinsically beautiful during childhood was something that generations of women had not truly experienced, and I desperately wanted to end this cycle. I did not want my daughter to undergo the damaging (both physical and psychological) processes of trying to conform and adhere to society's biased standards of beauty."
As Nylah suffers from eczema, she was highly sensitive to a lot of ingredients in hair products which meant Kameese struggled to find something that was suitable for her sensitive scalp and skin. Many of the hair care products traditionally marketed towards women with afro textured hair were designed to alter the curl pattern of afro hair types and contained harsh ingredients. In 2013, after searching in vain for that elusive product that would be both gentle and effective, Kameese decided that she would create her own shampoo and conditioner duo, and Nylah the brand was born.
